Whatiwhatihoe was once a royal village, the home of the Maori King, Tawhiao.

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Whatiwhatihoe / residence of the Maori King; Recto - bottom right - P.

Provenance: Purchased May 1890 by Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull from the artist. With other Payton etchings formed the second art purchases made by Turnbull for his collection
