Carte de visite portrait of a Maori woman wearing a korowai (tag cloak), taken on the 1870s by Samuel Carnell of Napier.
The korowai appearts in other portraits by Carnell, and was probably owned by the studio.
A contemporary inscription on PA2-2936 (a print from the same negative) states that this woman used to boast of having eaten the missionary's eye after being killed by Kereopa.
Subject was probably associated with the Pai Marire party who executed Carl Sylvius Volkner at Opotiki.
