Description

Album of views of Ahaura, Dunganville, Kawarau and Rimu, on the West Coast, showing gold dredging at Ahaura and Rimu, taken 1925-1927, probably by John Martyn Hume.

Several views show construction of a dam at the lake outlet into the Kawarau River. "It was dammed in 1926 in an attempt to reduce the level of the river and so recover the "tons of gold" believed to be in the river bed ... inspired by references to Kawarau's hidden gold in the prophetic novel `Anno Domini' written in England in 1889 by ... Sir Julius Vogel ... to no avail. The waters of the tributaries, the Shotover and Arrow Rivers continued to flow into the Kawarau and its level did not fall, and hundreds of investors saw their dreams shattered and their money lost. Today the dam provides a road bridge across the river between Frankton and Kelvin Heights" (See Wises New Zealand Guide).
