Description

Correspondence from Sir G Grey, Earl Grey, W Swainson, with annotations by Sir W Denison about the transportation to Van Diemen's Land of five Maori for rebellion. Includes: their treatment and the legality of their trial. Of the seven original prisoners; two were detained in New Zealand to give evidence against the Ngati Toa chief Te Rauparaha with the probability that he would be brought to trial. However, this did not occur and Te Rauparaha was held without trial on board HMS Driver and HMS Caliope until his release.
