A portrait of the seated figure of Tohitapu, with long hair and beard.
Inscribed on verso: 'Tohitapu from sketch by Rev. H. Williams. Carved and coloured wooden frame is from church at Te Wairoa which was buried by the eruption of Tarawera in 1886'.
Tohitapu feasted on the body of Marion du Fresne.
