Prisoners of war from Oflag IX A/Z boil potatoes during their forced march from Rotenburg an der Fulda to Wimmelburg in March/April 1945. Extreme left is Lt H H L Cartwright, Commander Signals Platoon, 2 South Staffs, captured at Arnhem September 1944. Photographed by Lee Hill.

The Allied prisoners of war who were being forced to march from their prison camps to avoid recapture by the quick advances of the Allies, slept in barns at night. Anything eatable was quickly looted before German guards or farmers discovered them [from official caption].
