Description: The scene is Wellington Harbour with port and cityscape (including the Beehive) in the distance. Left foreground is a Russian fishing trawler, with hammer and sickle painted on it, laden with fish. It has a huge superstructure of lamps and lights and five smiling Russians are busy hawling in more fish from nets that they have strewn about the harbour. The captain and mate stand watching from the top deck. The captain has binoculars while the mate reads from a newspaper named Dominski, 'Hawea chases Japanese squid boat.' The captain comments that this news means that the heat will be off them for a while. Refers to the troubles the fishing industry is having with other nations fishing in New Zealand waters. While the government worries about Japanese squid fishing boats, the Russians can continue happily trawling Cook Strait. 'Hawea chases Japanese squid boat' is a newspaper clipping glued onto the drawing of the newspaper, 'Dominski' that the mate is reading. Originally published in The Dominion, 19 April 1977 Other Titles - Russians fishing Cook Strait. Hawea chases Japanese squid boat. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - [Signature]; Recto - beneath image - Title in pencil in the hand of the cartoonist. Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Physical Description: Ink, image 360 x 502 mm, on paper, 510 x 636 mm. Provenance: Donated by the artist in 1996.

Description: There are six frames; in the first five frames various shoppers strolling past a fish shop stop and express their disgust at the sight of a large dripping squid hanging from a hook in the window. Next a news item states that a huge Japanese squid fleet has been seen off our coast and is of great concern. The last frame shows the population screaming its indignation at the Japanese who grin from their squidboat. In the last corner a bearded man (a self-portrait by Eric Heath) tucks into squid with cries of delight. Refers to New Zealanders' general attitude at the time that squid was not worth eating. Published in The Dominion 5 March 1874 Other Titles - News. Huge Japanese squid fleet off our coast 'of considerable concern to the country.' "Get out pirates!!! Go home Japs! And leave OUR BEAUT SQUID ALONE!" Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - [Signature] Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, 510 x 636 mm.
