Correspondence between Bown and his mother, 1857-1862; Bown's memories of growing up in England and his first years in New Zealand up to 1858 and memories of his daughter, Lily, of growing up on the family farm in the Pelorus Valley up to ca 1900

John Bown emigrated to New Zealand from England in 1857. After short periods working with survey parties and gold mining he settled on a farm in the Pelorus Valley in Marlborough district.

They describe his childhood in England, emigrating to New Zealand in 1857, working with a surveying party in Northland and then travelling to Nelson in October 1857 where he worked with another party surveying land in the Pelorus Valley where he bought land in 1858. Includes copy of newspaper obituary for Bown, 1913. Also personal memories of the Pelorus and Canvastown narrated by Miss Lily Bown (daughter) during 1968-1970 to her nephew, Frank L Ward.
