D Hedgewick reads in the sun outside an elaborate structure of stone walls and thatch during a lull in the fighting on the 5th Army Front in Italy, during World War II. The prevailing cold, very similar to the winter in southern New Zealand, has resulted in a wide variety of makeshift stoves and charcoal burners, an example of which can be seen in the cutout benzine tin in the foreground. Photograph taken circa 8 February 1944 by George Frederick Kaye.
