Description

Detachment of the 65th Regiment on parade on Mount Eliot, New Plymouth, in March 1861. Shows a medal being presented, possibly by Lt Colonel Young. Photographer unidentified.

On 29 March 1861 Lt Colonel Young of 65th Regiment presented medals for long and faithful service to Sergeant John Crowder and Privates James Furlong and Joseph Greensmith (see article in 'The Taranaki Herald', 30 March 1861, page 2). It is probable that this photograph documents that occasion.

Source of descriptive information - Papers Past, file print, album page. The file print identifies the subjects as Lieut Charles Urquhart presenting a medal to Corporal Bowdler, with Edward McKenna on the left, but newspaper research identifies the group as Lt Colonel Young presenting medals to Crowder, Furlong and Greensmith.
