Nazis packed Kiwi prisoners of war into cattle trucks 50 at a time, to send them into Germany after the Italian capitulation. The trucks had little ventilation, no sanitary arrangements, no water, and the men were in trucks for days. Some managed to break out and escaped back to Allied lines. The photographer, Lee Hill, had camera and film unknown to the Nazi guards, and developed negatives in German prison camps in solution mainly composed of urine.
