Description

Two letters were written by Jessie during the voyage she made with her husband and five young children on the Blenheim, from Greenock, Scotland, to Wellington, 25 Aug-27 Dec 1840. The first New Zealand letter, dated Petone 8 Nov 1841, contains family news inclding the birth of a son on 13 May 1841, and comments on the price of produce and stock, and on the high cost of keeping servants. By May 1842 the family had moved to Wanganui. The Wanganui letters concentrate on family and local matters, particularly the difficulty in obtaining land from local Maori. Jessie describes the building of their new home and the establishment of her dairy from which she made #1 a week selling milk and butter
