Two sailing ships standing out to sea on the left, with a rowboat being propelled through the waves and about to land on the beach, met by three men. Cliffs on the right. The view is from the shore, looking north-west out to sea.
New Plymouth had no harbour in the 1860s, and all landings needed to be made in this way
