Shows the headwaters of the Rakaia River and Ramsay Glacier, surrounded by mountains, which include Mt Kinkel, Mount Goethe, and Mein's Knob.
Original for a lithograph by Ward & Reeves, published as plate No. 11 in: Haast, Julius. 'Report on the headwaters of the River Rakaia, with twenty illustrations, a map, and three appendixes. Christchurch, 1867.
The field sketch for this watercolour is at C-097-042-1, with title "From Griffith's hut, Rakaia, towards sources, 17 March 1866".
