- Description
Wiremu Kingi Tarapipi Te Waharoa is standing, after addressing a group of his fellow Maori who are seated at his feet within the palisades of a pa. To the right, in the background, a ship is standing at sea while troops are marched towards it, overseen by Brigadier-General Carey on horseback. A group of volunteer Pakeha troops are marching up from the middle distance on the right. The suggestion is that the volunteers and rangers will be a far more formidable force than the Queen's troops who had not been used effectively.
The drawing is possibly the work of G. F. von Tempsky. The seated woman in the centre is strongly reminiscent of his work, and he is known to have drawn illustrations for 'Punch, or the Wellington Charivari' in the mid-1860s. The reference to the Forest Rangers (led by von Tempsky) also suggests a connection with him.
