One of three sister ships (the other sisters were 'Rangitane' and 'Rangitiki').

Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Description: Estate papers of W F Hansen and his father Anders. These include correspondence, diaries, autograph books, insurance papers, accounts, property papers, papers re British & Continental Film Company Ltd, 1920s. The diaries of Elizabeth Hansen, 1928-1932, 1954-1959, 1962, 1964, contain brief daily entries describing her domestic activities, weather conditions, involvement in community work and the Methodist Church. The early diaries were kept while the Hansens were in Featherston (the period immediately following their marriage). From 1954, after Fred Hansen died, Elizabeth lived at Masterton. Included in some of the diaries are newspaper clippings which report on church and community affairs. Contains letters by Anne Hansen aboard the `Rangitata', in England and Ireland to Fred and Lizzie Hansen in Masterton, New Zealand. Anne describes her daily life and travel and discusses family matters. Also contains a letter from Lena Cook (nee Hansen) while on holiday in Melbourne and a letter from an ex-soldier Elyabill Harrold to Fred Hansen following Fred's return from World War One. See ATL-Group-00334 for photographic material relating to the Hansen family. William Frederick Hansen's father, Anders Hansen was a lighthouse keeper. Fred Hansen was born at Cape Saunders, Westport. Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986). Description: James Alexander (Jim) Winton born Glasgow, Scotland, 1917. Recalls leaving school aged 18 years and joining John Brown Shipyard on the Clyde as an apprentice engineer. Talks about completing his apprenticeship in 1939 shortly before the outbreak of World War II and getting his first position at sea as tenth engineer aboard the New Zealand Shipping Company vessel, the `Suffolk' on the Britain - New Zealand service. Recalls World War II, serving on a naval patrol craft between Britain and Sweden carrying ball bearings for use in machinery for the war effort, and special agents being smuggled to and from Britain, receiving an MBE for this work. After the war rejoined the New Zealand Shipping Company aboard their passenger vessel `Rangitata' on the Britain - New Zealand service. Recalls coming to New Zealand in 1946 as one of the delivery crew on the Union Steam Ship Company's new vessel `Komata', leaving the ship on arrival and getting a position as launch engineer with the Wellington Harbour Board, leaving after 8 months and working at the power station at the head of Evans Bay. Backgrounds becoming a partner in a fishing venture brought together by a group of ex-servicemen. Recalls the vessel `Manuka' was chartered from the government, refitted and fishing commenced at the Chathams - this venture came to an end three years later. Mentions joining the steam trawler, `Thomas Currell' as chief engineer and recalls that this vessel was then owned by Combined Fisheries Ltd, a subsidiary of the Wellington Fishermen's Co-op and fish retailers of Wellington. Talks about purchasing the Thomas Currell and setting up the Thomas Currell Trawling Company Ltd of Wellington, continuing to fish the vessel in Cook Strait, off the Wairarapa coast and off Cape Campbell, before selling it to the Wellington Trawling Co Ltd and buying a printing business. Description: Family photographs taken by mainly unidentified photographers between 1930 and 1956. Some with annotations on the reverse. Features wedding portraits of Clark's parents Ivy Ella Martis and Fitzgerald Martin Clark in Wanganui in 1930, Clark as a baby and toddler, many photographs of Clark as a child, and teenager, some in costume, some in a garden, and some in front of a house. Other identified people include Clark's maternal grandmother Harriet Martis, Felicity Martis, and Lola Magee (nee Kench). Some people are unidentified. Also a set of Clark in school uniform and in class photos (1939, [1940?], 1946, 1947, 1948, and [1949?]) some with signatures on the reverse.
