Beauchamp, Chummie, 1894-1915

Katherine Mansfield's only brother, known as `Chummie'. Completed an Officers' Training Course and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the South Lancashire Regiment - `The Prince of Wales's Volunteers'. Stayed with Katherine in the third week of August 1915, while on a bombing instructors course at Clapham Common. Killed in France, October 1915 in a hand-grenade accident at Ploegsteert Wood, near Armentieres. Description: Auction catalogue of the Books, Maps & Manuscripts sale by Phillips Auctioneers held in London on 15 June 2001, featuring "Family papers of Katherine Mansfield" (Lot 263). The descriptive listing of the lot on pages 105-110 together with the reproduction of photographic portraits on the cover and page 104 & 106, provides details of the contents of the lot together with extensive transcriptions of excerpts from the papers. Photographs reproduced as illustrations include a portrait of Mansfield's brother Leslie, and one of Katherine and Leslie together. Section (vi) of the lot is described as "Thick tress of Katherine's light chestnut-brown hair, tied, in cloth, nearly two foot long (21 ins.)", and the writer concludes by stating "John Middleton Murry has often been accused of manipulating Katherine Mansfield's literary reputation and attempting to turn her into a cult figure. If she is a cult, this archive with its coiling lock of her hair, grave-moss, and letters from the dead brother takes on the status of a hidden inner shrine." (pages 108 and 110).
