Description: Photographs of Samoa, related to the period when Donald Alexander john Rutherford was a teacher, and then Superintendent of Schools in Samoa, between 1922 and 1936. Inside the front cover is a list of names of over a hundred native Samoan teachers who trained in Western Samoa during that period. There are group portraits of members of staff in the Samoan Education Department, teachers, students, sports teams; groups of boy scouts on parade; and one of a group attending the Conference on the Education of Native Races in the Pacific held in Honolulu in 1936. Several images show local and visiting dignitaries, including the Duke of Gloucester, Sir Herbert Hart, General Richardson, and Lord Bledisloe; and the visit to Samoa of a group of New Zealand teachers. Many of the images relate directly to the farewell ceremonies held at the departure from Samoa of Donald Alexander John Rutherford and his family in 1936. Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Roland James Searle, circa 1930s. The first subject is the opening of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial (Cenotaph), and includes a programme of the dedication and handing over on Sunday 17th April, 1932 (p 001-012). That is followed by the consecration ceremony for the National War Memorial and War Memorial Carillon (again with a copy of the programme), held on Anzac Day, April 25th, 1932 (p 015-023). Pages 029-033 show the arrival of the Wellington Jubilee Dock in 1931, the floating dock which was towed from England by two Dutch tugboats. The next sequence is entitled "The Express pulls out - Thorndon", and follows the Express to Wanganui where views show a river-boat trip up the Whanganui River (p 037-056), and include a map of historical areas on the river compiled by Annabell & Marchant, surveyors of Wanganui (p 055). The train trip is continued in the next section, and includes an illustrated diagram of the Raurimu Spiral, then arrival at the new Beach Road Auckland Railway Station. Photographs of Auckland include the Auckland Institute and Museum, Auckland University, Grafton Bridge, a sailing ship at the wharves, and the Auckland Zoo. Further North there are scenes of ploughing, a mine entrance, rock formations at Waro, and the Taheke Falls; before travelling to Rotorua and the surrounding thermal regions. A number of images were taken at Whakarewarewa, including photos of Paul Thomas and his wife, along with scenes showing women washing clothes in hot pools, a woman with a baby on her back holding a rope with a food basket cooking in the pool, children in a hot pool, and men at work carving. Paul Thomas wrote to thank Searle for sending him copies of photographs (p 101, written on May 1st 1932). Later photographs again with the train often in view show timber felling and milling, and views of the Arapuni hydroelectic power station. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Album of publicity photographs, taken by unidentified photographers, chiefly in 1935 At the beginning of the album there are a large number of photographs of the buildings, and crowds at a race meeting at the Trentham Racecourse. (See article by O.N. Gillespie in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue, 12, March 1, 1935). The album has many publicity photographs, designs for railway advertisements and posters, all showing the advantages of travel by rail. The advertisements include methods for travel savings: `Buy travel stamps. Travel savings N.Z.R. 1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 5/-, from railway stations & booking offices'; also `Start saving to-day for your trip away...'. Other posters advertise cheaper travel in the off-season, including summer holidays at the Hermitage, with low combined rail and motor fares" as well as advertising full season trips to tourist destinations. There is one photograph of a programme [?] for "New Zealand Authors' Week, 1936. Souvenir". Near the start of the album there is a large group of views at Flock House, agricultural college at Bulls. They show pig farming, dairy cows, sheep, lucerne for pasture and vegetable growing (See New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue 12, March 1, 1935); and in one of these Lord Bledisloe is bending down examining pasture (See New Zealand Railways magazine, Vol. 9, Issue 11, February 1, 1935) There are a few individual and group portraits, but only one or two are identified. Description: Publicity photographs taken by various unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. The only identifying information is a few pencilled notes giving some locations, but there are no captions identifying people. There is a large sequence showing events surrounding the first celebrations marking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th February 1934 attended by Lord Bledisloe. He had purchased the site, and donated money for the Treaty House renovations in 1932. The celebrations brought 10,000 Maori to Waitangi. The images show huge crowds, haka parties, various iwi performing, and parties of dignitaries including Lord and Lady Bledisloe, Joseph Gordon Coates and George William Forbes. Other scenes with Lord Bledisloe show him visiting the Waitaki Hydroelectric power station. Views of New Zealand include Government Tourist Bureau accomodation houses including those at Waitomo and the Hermitage (Mt. Cook); accomodation houses at Helensville and Parakai with interior and exterior views, and showing activities available (spa pools, games such as croquet, golf, and bowls); anglers standing by swordfish they have caught; skiing and ski lessons; and waterfalls. Industrial and agricultural views show dairy cows, citrus groves, the Kiwi Bacon Factory, printing presses, and race courses.
