Description: Journal of Davie's voyage to Lyttelton on two of the Canterbury Association's ships. Davie trans-shipped mid-ocean (4 Oct 1850) to the Randolph from the Sir George Seymour, his luggage having sailed with the Randolph after he missed the ship. Source of title - Title at head of page one Relationship complexity - This is a fuller version than the contemporary holograph at MS-0666, the latter ending on 28 Dec 1850, the typescript finishes on 14 Feb 1851 and details Davie's surveying work up to that time. This typescript appears to have been made from the original holograph in the Canterbury Museum Archives which ends on the same day. The Canterbury Museum also has another typescript, presented by E R Webb and part of the Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers' Collection (125), which is similar but not identical to this one. Description: Journal of Davie's voyage to Lyttelton on two of the Canterbury Association's ships. He trans-shipped mid-ocean (4 Oct 1850) to the `Randolph' from the `Sir George Seymour', his luggage having sailed with the `Randolph' after he missed the ship. Davie recorded daily entries, sometimes very brief and sometimes very detailed, often giving the position of the ship, describing the weather and shipboard activities. He continued the diary after landing at Lyttelton and in particular describes the progress of a lithograph he was doing. Note concerning the `first Canterbury lithograph' drawn by Davie and enclosed with the diary when it was originally sent, is dated 9 Jan 1851. Source of title - Transcribed from title page. Relationship complexity - Typescript version at MS-0667 has significant differences to this holograph and is from the longer original at the Canterbury Museum Archives. The latter is on 4 loose sheets of blue paper, folded to make 16 pages. There are significant textual differences between the two holographs. The Canterbury Museum original has entries for every day though some are short; the Turnbull Library version has fuller entries in places with new information based on further reflection but omits some days completely; some text is obviously intended for a non-New Zealand audience. Small boats are making their way with passengers from the Cressy to the wharf. The accompanying descriptive text reads: This sketch represents Port Lyttelton from a different and much nearer point of view, showing more distinctly the nature of the buildings which had been erected before the arrival of any colonists, and of the sort of places which the first passengers put up for temporary shelter immediately after their arrival. In this View, the shore of Victoria Harbour, opposite to Port Lyttelton, is represented; and the way of exit from the harbour is indicated. The passengers from the Cressy landed eleven days after those by the Charlotte Jane, Sir George Seymour and Randolph; the three last-named ships having sailed from England on the same day and entered Victoria Harbour on the same day, after a prosperous voyage of ninety-seven days. They have at the present time (July, 1851) been succeeded by thirteen large ships, making seventeen in all since last September. Probably based on an ink drawing by William Fox, located at A-195-015. Description: View of Lyttelton Habour from the Bridle Path, on the hills above the town. The first four ships are in port, with passengers leaving the Cressy via a wharf and walking up into the town. Several large buildings are near the water's edge, including immigration barracks, John Robert Godley's house and the offices of the Lyttelton Times newspaper just below the hill on the left. The Sumner Road is formed. Other small houses and tents are dotted around. Immigrants are carrying baggage and some have wheeled carts. A family is greeting a man building his house in the left foreground and a clothes line is in the right foreground. A building on the far right is marked in pencil "C Store H" [?]. On the verso is a schematic map of the location of Christchurch, showing the River Courtney (Waimakariri), Papanui Bush, the Avon River and Riccarton with William and John Deans' property, notes about land purchases and a list of names of land-owning Canterbury settlers. Possibly Fox's original drawing for the etching entitled "Port Lyttelton. Passengers by the Cressy landing" published in 'Four Illustrative Views of the Canterbury Settlement" in 1851. However the style suggests that it may be a copy of the etching by H. J. Cridland - cf A-195-016, especially the foreshortening of perspective and the manner of drawing people. A watercolour in the Hocken Library by Fox entitled "Port Lyttelton. Immigrants luggage disembarking, Jan 1851" is also similar. Description: View looking across the harbour from a position on the water, inwards and across towards the Lyttelton waterfront. There are several rowboats in the foreground, and the "Cressy" stands at anchor at the left. Labelled features from left to right are: The ship "Cressy" arriving, Bridle Road to the plain, wharfs and pier, Emigration barracks and Mr Godley's house, Sumner Road to Lyttelton. The accompanying descriptive text reads: This view shows the site of the town of Port Lyttelton, with the hills which separate it from the great plain; the Sumner Road, leading by way of Sumner to Lyttelton, the capital of the Settlement; and the four ships of the first expedition, the last of which, the "Cressy", has just cast anchor. Mr Godley's house, part of the Emigrants' Barracks, the wharves and jetty, and some storehouses and huts. are indistinctly visible. A bridle-path over the hills, the only available road to the Plain when the first colonists landed, may be discerned. Immediately behind Mr Godley's house and the barracks, is a fifty acre section of land, presented to the College by the widow of the late Mr Somes, M.P. for Dartmouth, the whole of which is sure to become town land, and highly valuable. This property is given for a scholarship to be named after the founder. At the time represented, the Sumner Road was still unfinished at some places of difficult engineering; and the first settlers, having but just arrived, had erected no permanent residences. At the time of the latest advices (March last), the passengers by the first four ships had selected their rural lands, and the greater part of them had removed from the Port to settle at and near Lyttelton in the Plain.
