Description

Recto: Head and shoulders profile portrait of a bearded, bare-headed man, with a smaller portrait, also in profile of Te Kooti wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Verso: frontal head and shoulders portrait, titled Te Kooti at Rotorua 1887.

Date 1887 may be incorrect, since Te Kooti visited Rotorua in December 1883 and is not known to have visited in 1887. The drawing was formerly attributed to Rev. Richard Laishley (1815-1897), but reattributed in 2003 to Thomas Ryan on the basis of the style of the drawing and the handwriting. The view on the back appears to be inscribed Te Kooti in 1883, with a tail on the 3 that could have been later interpreted by the artist as a 7. If 1883 is the correct date, Rev. Laishley cannot be the artist, since he was in England in December 1883. The work has also been attributed in the past to Rev. Laishley's son, Auckland solicitor Dr Richard Laishley (1844-1907). Laishley junior was involved in taking down Te Kooti's depositions in 1889, and could have had an earlier association with Te Kooti. See AT13/14/1 16 December 1992 and reply 24 February 1993.

The artist's phrase 'Tama te Kopua' is likely to be a reference to Tamatekapua meeting house, Ohinemutu, Rotorua

Other Titles - Tama te Kapua Tamatekapua

Inscriptions: Recto - Title below upper larger drawing. "in 1887" appears to have been added at a later date.; Verso - Te Kooti at Rotorua 1887

Description: Recto: Head & shoulders portrait of Te Kooti and smaller portrait of an unidentified man (although he is most probably Te Kooti, also, wearing a hat with its brim turned up at the front). Formerly attributed to Richard Laishley. However it is more likely to be the work of Thomas Ryan who was present at Tama te Kopua in 1887, when te Kooti was addressing Rotorua Maori. Ruyan drew Te Kooti in profile (see A-114-004-1 - Te Kooti or Turuki addressing Rotorua natives in 1887' - on the other side of this sheet). Ryan is very likely to have produced this drawing as well. The handwriting and style of drawing both appear to be Ryan's Other Titles - Laishley, Richard, 1815-1897. Te Kooti at Rotorua. 1887. Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
