Description

Descriptions of four plants collected and described on James Cook's second voyage. The gentian 'with white flowers inhabits rocks whilly surrounded by the sea ... was found in Dusky Bay, N. Z.' (The watercolour of this plant is no longer in the sketchbook). The three following are depicted on pages 6, 7 and 8. 'Single-leaved orch[id] A new plant peculiar to the dry hills of New Zealand especially the top of Long Island in Q. Charlotte Sound' (see E-104-006). 'An elegant genus of the orchidea, growing along with the other. Its height of that of the preceing sort never exceeds 18 inches' (see E-104-007). 'Portlandia. A shrub with large yellowish green leaves ... like leather, and long tubular white flowers. It grows on the bare rocks of a savage island in the South Sea without any soil at all... (See E-104-008).
