The Society for the Protection of Women and Children was formed in 1893 with the Wellington Branch starting in 1897. Its objects were to `prosecute in cases of cruelty, seduction, outrage or excessive violence to women and children', give advice and aid to women who had been cruelly treated, provide neglected children with homes and lobby for improvements in the law with respect to women and children. In May 1955 the Society's name was changed to New Zealand Society for the Protection of Home and Family.
