Description: Bridge over small stream in the foreground, a fenced in house with a tall gable and an outbuilding, with several trees in its garden in the middle ground, Mt Taranaki in the background See Recollections of Travel in New Zealand and Australia by J. C. Crawford, London, 1880, p. 86, where Crawford mentions visiting "the parsonage near the Waiwakaio" in the summer of 1847. The parsonage for St Mary's was at Te Henui, some two miles away from the church. It had half an acre of land with it. Its first occupant was William Bolland, who died on 29 May 1847, presumably shortly after Crawford's visit. Description: A small Maori settlement, with a paling fence, a gate formed by a cartwheel and several low huts, probably made with planks. One on the left, has a European-style verandah with a seated person. A plain is beyond with scattered trees, and the cliffs formed by the Rangitikei River can be seen in the distance The name Onepuehu is not in current use. Description: View across an inlet to a steep hill, topped with a cross or beacon. There is a jetty, four houses and another construction at the foot of the hill. Crawford has identified all of the other sketches in this sequence on their versos. The lack of identification on this one suggests that he himself was not sure what it represented. It is not identifiable as a part of Wellington, unless it is Mount Victoria seen from across Evans Bay. Perspective was not Crawford's strong suit and this may be the correct identity. Description: A small cottage perched on a bank, with trees behind and a view up Wellington Harbour towards the Hutt Valley. Shows one of the first European houses built in Wellington. Dr Henry Taylor arrived aboard the "Success" in Wellington with J. C. Crawford in December 1839. Tiakiwai was named for Tiakiwai Pa, a cluster of Maori houses at the northern end of Thorndon, close to the beach below modern Stowe Hill and the north end of Tinakori Road. Description: Album compiled in the late 1850s and early 1860s by James Coutts Crawford (1817-1889). The photographs fall into distinct groups, interspersed through the album, as follows: Portraits of the Dundas and Moreton families, and scenes in Anverara, Dalmally, Overton and other localities in Scotland, as well as views of Barton Court, Tortworth Court (Gloucestershire) and Kintbury (Berkshire) in England. These photographs were probably taken during Crawford's residence in England during the 1850s. Photographs of the Crawford, Clifford, Weld and Levin families in Wellington, and views around Molesworth, Mulgrave and Hobson Streets, taken in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The photographer is unknown, but possibly Crawford himself. Views of Wellington from the Terrace, taken in 1858 by the Reverend Arthur Stock (1823-1901). Description: Kaiwharawhara stream and bridge in foreground; across the stream is a raupo hut and John Lodge's two-storeyed public house (also known as the Rainbow Hotel or Kaiwharawhara Hotel). The raupo whare is either one built for road-makers, or the immigration barracks built by Te Kaeaea (Taringa Kuri) to house Scottish colonists put ashore at Kaiwharawhara in December 1840. The area is shown before the 1855 earthquake, which raised the flat land in this part, and made the stream more shallow. The road up the hill on the near side of the stream is the Porirua Bridle Path, 6 feet wide. On the far side of the stream is the original Porirua coach road. (Information from Kapi-Mana news, Vol 23 no. 14, 10 March 1981, p. 22, by William Secker). Original deposited by on indefinite loan by Brigadier H N Crawford, August 1968. (See TL 2/56).
