Description: Photographs of Kamo (Whangarei), Rodney County and Coromandel, taken, probably in the 1900s, by Daniel P Parker of Coromandel. Includes views of the construction on a timber dam (probably in Coromandel), Coromandel Public Hospital, Kennedy Bay (Coromandel), a stream crossing between Opitonui and Coromandel, bush camps in the Coromadel district and a traffic bridge in Rodney County. Daniel P Parker is recorded in the Wise's Post Office directories as an engineer in Coromandel from 1902 to 1930. Between 1906 and 1911 he is also recorded as a photographer. Description: Describes movements around Sydney, Auckland, Fiji (1861-1862), and participation in the Pukorokoro River blockade (1863). Important episode at Fiji, 27 Jul 1862, having recently arrived at Levuka, Captain Jenkins summoned the chiefs "to a formal meeting on board the Miranda for the purpose of conveying to them the decision of H.M. Ministers not to accept the sovereignty of the Fiji Islands, in terms drawn up by His Excellency Sir John Young". Includes text of declaration in English and Fijian. The Miranda stayed at Levuka most of Jul and Aug; entertained King Thankombau; description of Levuka. Wreck of the `Orpheus' described, Feb 1863. Mainly short log entries but 1863 in some detail; summaries for 1861, 1862 included. Description: Notebook containing handwritten research notes, photographs, and newspaper clippings tipped in. Contains notes and clippings relating to the Ōrākau battle of 1864 and King Tawhiao, waiata, karakia, and a poem by Thomas Bracken about Ōrākau. Also includes notes from an interview with Tamati Hapimana, of Mokoia Island, which includes a karakia for planting kumara. The photographs include images of Ōrākau (one dated 1870 located at page 52 of the notebook, and one undated), and one of Ngāti Raukawa chief Hitiri Te Paerata located at page 39 of the notebook. Description: Copy of a topographic map of the area in the Murimotu District from the Kaiiwi River and the Ohura River across to Lake Taupo, the Kaimanawa Ranges and the Rangitikei River. Cut road lines, proposed lines and native tracks are referred to in a reference key. Some tracks are routes proposed by Mr. Hogg and Mr. Booth, also an old war track described by natives is marked. Plantations, mountain peaks, rivers and streams are named. Relief features are described. Major Marshall's and Birch's Station are marked. Handwritten note on bottom right of map: The lake and mountains are from Hochstetter's map corrected by the Auckland Trig Survey: the Wanganui River from Brewer's survey, and the Upper Turakina and Rangitikei from Swainson's map corrected by Monro's survey. Description: Cadastral map showing area 9 miles south of Tauranga, from the Ruahihi Bridge bordering the Kumi Kumi land blocks on the west and the Kaimai and the Tauwharawhara on the east. The Mangapapa River is shown, along with the Mangakarengorengo, Ngaumuwahine and Manga Hurengorengo Streams. Most of the land blocks indicate their acreage. In the Whaitikuranui no. 6b block, diagram and text which reads 'Thames Valley Co. Station Homestead'. The road or track from Cambridge (Okoroire) to Tauranga is shown to be 31 miles. A pencil annotation shows the Ongaonga no. 2 block and the Kumi Kumi no. 1 block (up to the Ngaumuwahine Stream) subdivided. The map has pencil and some ink annotations. Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand. He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866.
