Description: The essay focuses primarily on Ralph Fletcher Watkins, a remittance man from Bolton, Lancashire, his marriage to Ani Hardiman and their life in the Hokianga where Ralph was a school teacher. Information has been gathered from the journal Watkins kept 1867-1881. Information is also given about their children, in particular Maggie, the writer's grandmother, who as a young mother died of tuberculosis. Description: Notebook containing research notes relating to Maori history (particularly food-gathering practices) from around the Taupo area. It seems that Cowan has used Maori Land Court minute books for his information as he attributes the information to land block names and case names, informant names and dates. Some of the people he mentions are: H Tumatara Pio of Te Teko (aged 77 in 1900), Te Waaka Tamaira (Rangatira block, 1884), Hitiri Te Paerata (mentioned several times), Tini Waata, Wineti Paranihi, Aperahama Werewere, Te Heueheu Tukino, and Te Rangitahau. The book also contains information given to him from Hare Hongi about Maori astronomy, makutu, and the moari [swing]. Contains whakapapa, karakia and waiata. Description: A Maori man and two women seated outside a carved gateway and the palisade of Maketu Pal, near Tauranga. The woman in the white skirt has been identified as Hineaturama, Phillip Tapsell's third wife. The seated man with the spear to the right is Hikaroa. The dog in the foreground was sent from Denmark to Philip Tapsell in New Zealand by his brother. It was a Dutch barge dog. The gate shown in this view is now in the Vienna Museum. Description: Shows west elevation of a wooden church building (probably All Saints' Church, Nelson) revised north elevation, transverse section, and longitudinal section. There is a clerestory level as on the church as it was built in 1868; therefore this may be an 1868 revision of the original 1867 plan. The ground floor windows are triple and those at clerestory level are pairs. Other plans of this church are entitled and identified by donor. See the history of the building of the church, in H F Ault's "Centennial history of All Saints' Parish, Nelson, 1862-1962". (Nelson, 1962). Quantity: 1 plan(s). Description: Copy of a hand-drawn map of two adjointing sections of farm land adjacent to the Harataunga Harbour, now known as Kennedy Bay, and bordered by the Whareroa and Ohinau Streams, Puketutu and Kaotara Hills and Rangitahi. One section has the names of Nathan Kennedy & Brothers, while the second has McGregor & Atkinson's names, together with acreages. The McGregor & Atkinson property includes the location of a sawmill and wharf, buildings are indicated and one is named 'Mr. Atkinson's'. A handwritten note on the original, written within this section states 'Grant to J. Cruikshank, Nov. 26th., 1867. 12.15a Sol 155'. Within the section of Nathan Kennedy & brothers, the note states 'Grant to Mr. J. Kennedy, Nov 26th, 1867. 12.15a Sol 155'. Includes references to Native land and Mr. D. Lowe's land.
