Description: Describes movements around Sydney, Auckland, Fiji (1861-1862), and participation in the Pukorokoro River blockade (1863). Important episode at Fiji, 27 Jul 1862, having recently arrived at Levuka, Captain Jenkins summoned the chiefs "to a formal meeting on board the Miranda for the purpose of conveying to them the decision of H.M. Ministers not to accept the sovereignty of the Fiji Islands, in terms drawn up by His Excellency Sir John Young". Includes text of declaration in English and Fijian. The Miranda stayed at Levuka most of Jul and Aug; entertained King Thankombau; description of Levuka. Wreck of the `Orpheus' described, Feb 1863. Mainly short log entries but 1863 in some detail; summaries for 1861, 1862 included. Description: Original log book of an account of Jonas Eastwood Woodhouse of his journey from London, England to Southland, New Zealand on board the 'New Great Britain' in 1863. Also a typed transcript of the same. Woodhouse describes life on board the ship in detail, including the weather, food, entertainment, equator crossing celebrations, and deaths of other passengers. He also describes sailing past Solander and Steward [Stewart?] Islands and arriving in Southland where they were met by a pilot ship and assessed for quarantine. He gives his impressions of the bush, houses, gardens, animals, and pig hunting that he could see from the ship before they landed. Also includes a list of passengers on the ship, organised by county and country, and the words to 'Song of the New Great Britain' composed by Mr Robert Wotton - another passenger on the ship. Also includes letters addressed to Mr F R Woodhouse (a great grandson of Woodhouse and previous owner of the book) in relation to the log book (letters dated 1956, 1976, and 1981).
