Description: Watercolour shows the south Wairarapa coast, possibly near Te Kopi looking west from near Cape Palliser, with dwellings and probably a whaling station (Wades Whaling Station? as mentioned in the Wellington Spectator of 1844 - quoted in Mita Carter's "Early Palliser Bay" (1982)) in the centre. Several men stand on the steep hillside at the right. The foreground terrain is covered with low scrub. Entitled "Whaling station, Palliser Bay, Wairarapa" in McArthur's August 1987 auction catalogue. Dated from other views of the same area. Other Titles - Whaling station, Palliser Bay, Wairarapa Similar to watercolour at B-031-025. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows a view of Wellington Harbour with Thorndon Quay or Esplanade, the year before the reclamation started. The square object along the pier at the end of the esplanade may be an early version of the Thorndon swimming baths, although the later turretted version was built out into the harbour from reclaimed land. The foreground shows lawns surrounded with trees, probably the garden at Tiakiwai, the home of the Stowe family. The photographer who may be seen with his tripod in the doorway of the farm shed in the background is probably Joseph Zachariah (1867-1965), who practiced in Wellington as Zak Studios.
