Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. Description: Aerial views, exterior views and interior views of the Gear Meat Company at Petone, between 1955 and 1963. Includes sheep in holding pens, various areas of the meat works showing activities such as skinning, whole carcasses, various stages of preparation for packaging meat for the local market and for transport overseas; further products including canned meat; tallow; hides; wool; and fertilizer. Vehicles for the transportation of meat include ships at London Docks unloading frozen carcasses, and a fleet of delivery vans for the local wholesale trade. One photograph shows Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh) visiting the meat works in 1956, coincidentally at the time of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Gear Meat company. Different Gear Meat Company shops are shown, in Jackson Street, Petone; in Upper Hutt; and at 94/98 Lambton Quay. The first `Primary Fresh Foods' shop opened by the company at 12 Bunny Street, Lower Hutt, is seen on opening day with a delicatessen section as well as meat department. There are exterior and interior views of the different shops. A number of views show hostel accomodation for meat workers, showing exterior views, a bedroom, a kitchen for communal use, and a social hall. The final section shows the Gear Meat stall at Hutt Valley Industries Fair, 19-27 August, 1960; and their stall at the Manawatu & West Coast Agricultural & Pastoral Association Show in November 1962. An envelope inserted at the back of the album contains views of sheep holding pens, further scenes of the interior of an abatoir, and one view of the Gear Homestead. Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. South African war album

Description: Photographs of the North Island Regiment of the New Zealand Army 8th Contingent in preparation for leaving on the troopship Surrey to fight in the South African War. These photographs were taken by Alfred Jones & Co. mostly in Auckland. They include views of speeches by Richard John Seddon, and General Babington in Auckland., and the departure of the Surrey from Auckland. Other images show the Surrey in Wellington Harbour, rowing eights in the harbour and the Contingent's military camp in Newtown. Two views show warships in Wellington Harbour and a decorated gateway in the city for the Duke of York's visit to New Zealand. There are a number of views of the processions and ceremonies for the funeral of Cecil Rhodes in Cape Town. Richard Seddon's visit to the Hudson's Soap Works in Liverpool is shown in several photographs taken by an unidentified photographer. Page 45 shows a "review at Pretoria" at which there was a "presentation of V.C.s and also a Royal Humane Society medal to Sergt. Cassidy N.Z.M.R. by Lord Roberts". The information is hand-written over the photograph as a Christmas greeting. Inserted in an envelope is a sheet of paper with the signatures of "Colonel Wyndham and the Officers of the Imperial Representative Corps". (Colonel Wyndham was with the 21st Lancers).
