Context: The company (Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML)) that runs the Forsyth Barr Stadium, in Dunedin, is facing an annual rates bill of up to $2 million a year, a figure it has no ability to pay. C finance and corporate support general manager Athol Stephens said it would take a simple council vote to cut the stadium's rates to a more manageable figure of $134,000, a more than 93% discount on the $2 million charge. Description: Shows a tour bus in Dunedin pointing out the old rugby stadium and the new. Context: The old Carisbrook stadium was branded with the name "The House of Pain", due to its reputation as a difficult venue for visiting teams. The building of the controversial Forsyth Barr Stadium which it was hoped would bring huge benefits to the region is also costing ratepayers a lot of money. Dunedin's overall debt has increased 1700 per cent to $586 million since 2000 and frustrated ratepayers say the debt carried by the council is too high for a city of Dunedin's size and that unchecked spending, in particular on the controversial stadium, has saddled them with an unfair financial burden. Date: 2011

From: Tremain, Garrick, 1941- :[Digital cartoons published in the Otago Daily Times]

Description: Three businessmen stand inside the new Dunedin stadium; one looks at the roof and says 'It's astonishing what can be done with plastic' and another says 'Sure is an amazing thing... the credit card!' Context: Dunedin's new hi-tech $190 million indoor stadium was opened by Prime Minister John Key this morning (Saturday 6 August 2011). The 105-metre roof is made of 20,500 square metres of Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) which allows 90% of the UV light from the sun to pass through it. Construction of the stadium began in June 2009 with some locals initially sceptical of the project, but Mayor Dave Cull said it is important locals support it. "The product was never in doubt, it was the affordability and financial risk of it," he said. (tvnz.co.nz: August 5 2011) Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
