Description: James Robert Aburn born North East Valley, Dunedin 1916. Outlines family background - paternal grandfather, a builder in Dunedin, was involved in building projects including Harraway's (Harraway) Mill, Green Island and His Majesty's Theatre, Dunedin. Recalls primary schooling at Sawyers Bay School, Port Chalmers and George Street School. Mentions the `C A Larsen', a whaling ship which had struck a rock near Stewart Island and put into dry dock in Port Chalmers. Talks about secondary education at Otago Boys High School; rugby; cadet training; household chores; first pushbike (bicycle); Depression and first job in 1934 as a copyholder in the reading room of the Otago Daily Times office. Describes service in the Airforce as an A grade mechanic during World War II, spending time at Guadalcanal in a flight called Utility Flight which serviced all transport aircraft. Recalls buying Turner's Service Station in 1952 and describes part played by oil companies in financing service stations and changes in the garage business around 1970s. Mentions changes to week-end trading, pressure from oil companies and changes in work practices. Backgrounds involvement with Green Island Borough Council and talks about the amalgamation of the Council with Dunedin in 1989. Discusses Abbotsford landslide [1979], describing what happened when first signs of earth movement were spotted and what happened on the night. Refers to media attention. Description: The unpublished autobiography briefly describes Bradshaw's childhood in Christchurch but mainly concentrates on his career in aviation, 1933-1975. Source of title - supplied title Bradshaw established Southland Airways in 1935 and pioneered commercial aviation in Southland and Westland. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the Royal Air Force from 1940-1947 and flew with reconnaissance and transport squadrons in the Pacific. After a period flying with Belgian and English, airlines Bradshaw returned to New Zealand in 1950. He settled in Nelson where he continued to fly part time until 1975. Description: Phil Skilton was born at Onekaka in 1893. His father, Thomas Skilton, emigrated from England in 1870 with his parents to join his older brothers in the Collingwood gold-fields. Recalls his father married the first teacher at Rockville School. Early memories include the launching of the Parapara gold dredge about 1900, his father's employment for the Parapara Iron Ore Company, the 1905 Collingwood fire, the construction of Druggans Dam, Rockville in 1900, the Parapara paint works about 1905 and details about his father working in the Parapara Silver mine pre 1900. Recalls celebrations in Takaka at the end of the Boer War. Talks in detail about World War I and fighting at Gallipoli, the Somme and Passchendaele. Describes timber milling with brother Rupert Skilton at Tukurua in the years between the wars. Talks about a gold claim in the Parapara in the Depression and working on Westhaven Dry Road and Bainham Fifteen Mile Bridge. During World War II Phil Skilton joined the Air Force and supervised forestry gangs in the Solomon Islands. His wife Mary and family settled in Nelson. Describes building a home with timber felled by himself. Description: Largly New Zealand material and photographs of paintings of the war in the Pacific by Allan Barclay Barns-Graham (official war artist) and Oliver Arthur Gillespie. New Zealand material includes views of coastal defences, military training at various camps, prisoner of war camps, Home Guard, public military parades, sports, army personnel including portraits, guns, tanks and other weapons, repatriated soldiers, medical units, ministerial visits, the posthumous investiture of Lt Ngarimu with the V.C., and mechanical transport. Arrangement: This collection is made up of empty negative envelopes with captions some of which have file prints attached to them, and sheets of contact prints which are also captioned. All of the negative envelopes have the relevant negative numbers written written on them. They were scattered throughout the wax boxes in which the War History collection had been housed for the last eight years. In giving the collection a general order they have been sorted into their series groups. This collection contains material which has been called the "35mm" series.
