One of Trentham showing the rows of long huts with some tents to the left and a billiards hall, YMCA, catholic hall and military shooting gallery on the right. One of Tauherenikau showing men filling troughs and loading carts in the foreground and tents in the background amongst the trees. Four of Featherston showing "canvas town"; the rows of huts with a small row of shops including a photographers, and a railway siding on the right; the stables with horses; and the training ground with artillery lined up on the left and the huts behind. Photographer was Varley. Templars Cricket Club, runners up in the third class championship of Wellington Cricket Association 1910-1911. Description: Photographs of Featherston Military Camp in the Wairarapa, taken circa 1916 by an unidentified photographer. Comprises scenes with soldiers and views of the camp grounds. 1. Five soldiers and their equipment pose informally in their semi-erected tent, which has square perimeter of stones laid around it. Two and possibly three hold the rank of sergeant. 2. A group of soldiers, armed and with slouch hats, pose informally, possibly during a miltary exercise. A sergeant to the right of the group appears to be in command. 3. A general view of the layout of Featherston Camp. There appears to be snow on the ground. 4. Seven soldiers in the camp hold a snowball fight after a heavy snowfall. 5. A soldier in a 'lemon squeezer' hat poses before two of the camp huts. There is snow on the ground. 6. A squad of soldiers drills before an officer. To the left of the squad is a telegraph pole. 7. A company with rifles on a march-past in the camp. 8. Troops line up at an outdoor canteen. 9. Soldiers marching with their equipment past the camp huts. Description: Rule's diary kept while he underwent military training in New Zealand during World War One. From Timaru, Rule records travelling to the North Island, daily life at the Featherston Military Camp which includes details of parades, inspections and drills. Rule notes his personal correspondence, family birthdays and incidental financial payments. Also includes newspaper cuttings relating to the Great War and the Influenza Epidemic of 1918-1919. Source of title - Transcribed from item Accompanying material - Includes photograph of Rule in his library; newspaper cuttings; and an A-Z pencil sketch of military arm signals.
