Description: Topographic map of Kapiti Island with some described features and named vegetation. Includes the site of an anchorage adjacent to Motungarara Island and Kapiti Island. Ink blotches obliterate parts of the map Kapiti Island includes numerous Maori placenames and named streams. Pa sites and former Maori settlements are marked, as are whaling stations and a cavern, formerly a burial ground. Sites of mutton birds are marked as are water supplies, walking tracks, the site of an old homestead and old cultivations. Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Topics talked about include the reason the club was started, its relationship to the Maori Education Foundation, Mawai-Hakona being the Maori name for Trentham, the significance of Ned Nathan of Nga Puhi to the club, moving to new premises from Trentham Army Camp, old members of Ngati Poneke, and other Maori clubs in the Wellington area. Description: The reminiscences mainly concentrate on the period 1842 to 1878 and were dictated to members of his family during the latter part of 1908 and beginning of 1909. They give details of White's mothers family and his father's career as a midshipman. They then go on to describe White's career in New Zealand first as a surveyor in the Horokiwi and Wellington areas, a farmer at Mohunoa (Kapiti) and Wainuiomata, in the volunteer forces which fought against Te Rangiatea, his visits to Auckland and then his later career in Mongonui [Mangonui] holding various government posts including work for the Land Commissioner. The reminiscences give White's impressions of relations between Maori and settler especially in the greater Wellington/Kapiti and Maunganui districts and recount many incidents involving such people as Te Rauparaha, Governor Grey, Fitzroy, McLean, Hadfield and many others. Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia.
