Description: Sketches depicting incidents arising out of a taua or raiding party visiting Parawera settlement to exact revenge after a case of adultery. The marae, various groupings of iwi, dances, fights, haka, horseriding, and competitions are depicted, along with a visit from the police. The Parawera group were Ngati Apakura, Te Wherowhero's iwi, and the visitors in search of payment were Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Hourua and Ngati Koroki. Ngati Haua are also mentioned in one sketch. Description: View from the first ridge above the beach showing a prefabricated barracks to the left and the tents erected to house the first settlers to Nelson, a well, a flag, and several carts. The view looks from the land towards the Boulder Bank and Haulashore Island, and the Arrow or Fifeshire rock across Tasman Bay to the distant snow-capped Moutere Hills and Tasman Range. The first three immigrant ships, The Will Watch, the Whitby and the Arrow are shown in the harbour with flags flying. There are clumps of trees at the water's edge, but the land is otherwise grassed or with flax and bracken. Original watercolour for the related lithograph "View of Nelson Haven in Tasman's Gulf, New Zealand, including a part of the site of the Town of Nelson" published in 1842. Smith was a New Zealand Company employee at the time of painting this oil and it was probably painted for the Company or as a promotion for colonisation of Wellington. Description: View looking across the river with toitoi and other plants in the foreground, a Maori canoe on the river, a few dwellings on the far side, the pa palisades on a low rise and lines of military tents beyond, with steeper hills in the background. The glue marks on the reverse match those at E-320-f-005, and the top right corner has been replaced, also matching the markings at E-320-f-005.

Description: Extensive view across a bay towards a beach and headland, with houses, barracks, a parade ground with redcoats drilling, the Red Ensign flag flying beside the largest house high on the hill to the left, the home of Colonel Cyprian Bridge. There are several small boats on the water. Nobby Island is on the left. Other buildings along the waterfront, from left, include barracks, in the centre the magazine of the 58th Regiment, a sentry box (set back from the waterfront), the hospital, the canteen and the officers' residence on the right The title on Bridge's pencil sketch (f-E-320-014) identifies his own house 'where I was quartered 3 years and a half, the parade ground, officers' houses and our pleasure boats in the foreground'. Physical Description: Watercolour 322 x 538 mm Provenance: The sketchbook was acquired by Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull in July 1893. Transfers: Removed from sketchbook E-320-f, along with C-018-020, an ink and wash version of the same view. Had been folded to fit in the sketchbook. Still in the sketchbook are Cyprian Bridge's "View of my house and cantonment at Wahapu" (p.14), probably the drawing copied by Williams; also on p. 12 and 13, 2 pencil and wash details of the same view, either by Bridge or Williams..

Description: An enormous open hakari, or wooden construction, with flags flying from poles on the top and people climbing up its sides, seated beneath it, and moving around its base. A long low whare is in the foreground, with another at right angles to it, and piles of food are on the ground with the whole enclosed by a low fence. This watercolour was originally in the Bridge/Williams album (E-320-f). See also: B-030-006, E-144-002 and a watercolour in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia for three other almost identical views by Cuthbert Clarke.
