Description: Letters written by Herbert (Bert) Charles Thomas to his parents from Auckland, Hamilton and Tokanui (1945-1946), then from Sydney, the `Asturias', South Africa, Luanshya in Northern Rhodesia, Dar-Es-Salaam, Mikindani in Tanganyika (1946-1949) and finally from England (1949-1950). He described his daily work while in New Zealand, experiences with landladies, his experiences looking for work and travelling in various parts of Africa. The letters have been transcribed by Thomas's sister, Betty Brookes, and family background information supplied by another sister, Ann Turvey. Description: Diary entries from the Taylors' arrival in England in July 1867 to 31 Jan 1870, and 1 June 1871 until their return to New Zealand in November of the same year. Mrs Taylor records their daily activities and the people they met, especially family affairs and concerns. An account of their voyage back to NZ on the `Shannon' to Melbourne, by the `Tararua' to Port Chalmers and then by a variety of transport back to Wanganui. Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - The Library received photocopies of the originals of these two diaries which Springer has not transcribed; the Taylors's journey to England was largely for Rev R Taylor to prepare his second book for publication. Description: The diary covers from 1 Jun 1893 to 1 Sep 1894 and includes a voyage Herries made on the `Kaikoura' to New Zealand to visit his brother, William, of Te Aroha. Herries made almost daily entries and during his working week he noted when he was in chambers, who he dealt with, and especially recorded social occasions He left for NZ on 20 July 1893, reaching Hobart 1 Sep and NZ 6 Sep, and returned to England on 20 Jan 1894 on the `Mararoa' to Sydney and the `Ville de la Ciotat' to Marseilles, arriving there 2 Mar and returning overland to England. Description: Corliss has not kept a daily diary but rather an occasional journal describing special occasions such as a family holiday to Picton, a train trip from Petone to Wellington, aspects of her teaching career, lists of stories she had written, her musical interests, and a voyage to England on the `Ayrshire' in 1914, where she studied music. Included with the volume is a copy of a letter from George H Valentine to his brother (from Lefevers Peninsula, Port Adelaide, 7 Sep 1859), and notes re the `Annie Wilson' which arrived at Wellington 22 March 1854. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Source of title - Supplied by diarist Accompanying material - As well as the letter from Valentine to his brother (1859) there are items (photocopied) regarding the voyage of the `Annie Wilson' (1854) which appear to have been kept with the journal; accompanying the journal is a letter from the donor giving additional information about the Corliss family and himself, a direct descendant of Amos Burr of the `Tory'. Description: Contains outward correspondence from Phyllis Long to her friend Doreen Ross of Waitomo. Long writes from England and Srinagar in Kashmir about her life. Includes descriptions of teaching and schools in both England and India, Long's engagement to Eric Tyndale-Biscoe, wedding, and birth of their son Hugh (and raising him by Truby King's method) and daughter Ann. Description of Kashmir include where they live; having servants; lakeside and houseboat holidays as well as skiing, hiking, and horse riding trips in the mountains; the family donkey and teaching the children to ride; riots by the Muslim population; and still and film photography. Long also reacts to the news from New Zealand including the health of friends, slump in wool prices, and construction of Tongariro Chateau at Mount Ruapehu "it sounds to us the place must be entirely ruined with this new hotel". Also describes returning to England to live with her parents in Cambridge and travelling around the United Kingdom with Tyndale-Biscoe as he gives talks about Kashmir. Also contains an official bulk letter from Tyndale-Biscoe in his position at the CMS Schools relating news that Hindu widows may now be remarried, the 1928 flood in Srinagar, and the religious riots.
