Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Description: Shows a lake scene (Te Whanga Lagoon) with two ducks in the water and two shags on a branch in the foreground, a canoe on the lake in right distance. Across the lake is a distinctive volcanic cone hill with smaller peaks further in the distance. Description: Shows Von Tempsky, smoking a pipe and seated by the cartwheel in the foreground, with Dr I. E. Featherston standing behind him. Sergeant Birchfield may be the standing soldier on the left, guarding the group. Seated are Maori guide Te Mahuki and his wife Takeroa (Lucy). There is a horse standing by the cart on the right. There is a billy boiling on a campfire in the centre of the group of figures. The group is in the foreground looking out over an encampment at the right in mid-distance, with troops moving on lower further hills, and in the distance a hilltop fort or pa, with a flag flying. There is a cabbage tree in the left foreground. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Description: Shows a Maori canoe with carved prow, containing 2 figures, one Maori, one European, and a dog, alongside a raft or mokihi being paddled by a young Maori man in the foreground. Both craft negotiate river rapids. In right foreground a fallen tree trunk is a perch for a few birds, and in the background cabbage trees stand in front of denser bush. The scene is thought to be close to modern Canvastown The rapids, or low waterfall on the Pelorus River, were close to modern Canvastown Listed by the New Zealand Company as received in London by the Company [before 1842], item no. 5 E J Wakefield wrote about travelling with his uncle William Wakefield up the Pelorus River between 6 and 16 September 1839 and mentioned that the paddler on the mokihi or raft was a 12-year-old boy. perched in the centre of a raft made of two bundles of raupo tied with flax. (Adventure in New Zealand, 1845, page 63). Description: Shows view from high vantage point, looking over flat plain towards present-day Motueka, and out to Tasman Bay. Kaiteriteri is on the left, and D'Urville Island in the right distance with French Pass visible as a gap between the island and the mainland. New Zealand Company drawing no. 70. This is the original drawing for the lithograph 'The level country at the south end looking north of Blind Bay' published in E. J. Wakefield's 'Illustrations to Adventure in New Zealand' in 1845. The lithographer has added cows to the foreground and changed the predominant tree ferns and cabbage tree seen in this view.
