Description: The letters were edited by the author to delete references to family matters. What remains is a detailed description of the conduct of the War as seen from Rogers' perspective. His duties involved managing traffic to and from the front and collecting intelligence. This kept him in close contact with the New Zealand Army during the various campaigns it was involved in in France. Rogers pays particular attention to his dealings with both Corps and regimental officers and men. Relationship complexity - Further photographs by Stanley are in the photographic collection of James Henderson, Photographs, chiefly relating to Stanley Dick Rogers, a Captain in New Zealand Mounted Rifles during World I, PACOLL-8637 Rogers worked at the Railway Workshops in Petone. He joined the Volunteers in 1902 and was frequently seconded to the Defence Department. In Aug 1914 he was appointed Assistant Commandant on Somes Island. In February 1916 he left New Zealand aboard the `Rangiotu' with the 3rd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade for Egypt and subsequently landed in France in May 1916. In August 1916 he was seconded as a field officer, II ANZAC Army Corp (later Headquarters XXII Corps) and appointed Road and Traffic supervisor. Description: Largest group relate to campaigns in North Africa. Main places are Cairo, Alexandria, Helwan, Bardia, and Tripoli. Images of troops in the desert, vehicles, weapons, aircraft, soldiers at Christmas dinner, in hospital and at sports. Soldiers training in New Zealand, and views of flowers on trucks at Michael Savage's funeral in 1940.. Photographs relating to a troopship on the way to War. There are various scenes on deck showing crowds of soldiers and boxing and wrestling matches. The ship may have been the Oronsay as there is a photograph showing troops embarking on this ship. Associated with this group are images which show other liner troopships which may have been travelling in convoy. They include the Mauritania, Queen Mary, Empress of Canada, and Empress of Britain. The views of ships in Freemantle and Freetown Harbours may also be associated with this group of photographs. There are some views of England, in particular ships on the Clyde. Description: The diary of Rifleman C M Kirkland describes training at Rangiotu, near Wanganui, embarkation, battles and trench warfare around Armentieres, his injury, recovery in England at Brockenhurst Hospital and return to New Zealand. The entries are disjointed but give a vivid account of the fighting and the experience of being under bombardment in the frontline trenches. Handwritten label of front cover of diary reads "Dad's diary written during the 1st World War. He was a patient in Brockenhurst Hospital". Three pages, dealing with his training at Rangiotu, were torn, presumably by Kirkland, from the body of the diary and have been placed in the envelope inside the front cover. Description: Four photograph albums compiled by Robert Henry (Harry) Fulton relating to his World War I service between 1916-1919 with New Zealand 12th Reinforcements, and with the New Zealand Army Service Corps (NZASC) based at New Zealand Base Kit Stores unit at Sling Camp, Bulford, England. Many photographs taken by Fulton. Some prints are taken by other unknown photographers as indicated by caption 'loaned negatives', and as they show campaigns, such as Gallipoli, in which Fulton did not serve. Images show his time with the 12th Reinforcements; from the journey from New Zealand on HMNZT 'Ulimaroa' and 'Ivernia' troop ships to Egypt in 1916, camp life in England as part of the NZASC, and activities whilst on leave during wartime and post war. Particularly shows family and home in Ireland and sight-seeing photographs from around Egypt and Great Britian, including New Zealand soldiers at Stonehenge. Prints have captions on the album pages; some images are inscribed on the print. Fulton has often arranged images of unrelated locations and activities on individual album pages. Description: Ted Hill was born in Birmingham, England in 1920. Recalls his mother's death when he was six years old and several housekeepers. Describes being interested in singing and painting as a child and leaving school at the age of fourteen. Describes his father's death from an accident when he was sixteen. Talks about working for an accounting firm and then for his uncle's building business where he learnt about drawing, buildings and surveying. Discusses joining the army in 1940, being accepted for officer training and going to the north west frontier of India. Gives a detailed description of his time in India, becoming a parachutist, and being sent to Imphal where the Japanese were driven out. Recalls rethinking his direction after the war and doing a course in architecture at Art School in Birmingham. Describes the battle between classical and modern architecture at the time. Recalls his first job in Birmingham and a subsequent job in London. Mentions marriage and divorce before coming to New Zealand in 1958. Recalls Ministry of Works architects Frank Stewart, Gordon Wilson, Warwick Keen, Neville Burren, Jock Beere and the `Tomato House' in Wellington. Recalls his first job on an office accommodation block and doing working drawings for the Government Print Office. Discusses the role of Ned Blake Kelly in this project. Photographs relating to Joan Banks who went to Japan with the Women's Army Auxillary Corps (WAACs) as part of the occupation after the Second World War. She was in Japan in 1948, and worked as a hostess in clubs set up for the occupying forces. Places identified in Japan are Chofu, Kobe, Kyoto, and Ozuki Camp. Buildings identified are the Kokkaso Hotel, Sumitoma Villa (Kobe), and Otsuya Inn (Kyoto) 2. Campaigns in North Africa. These include troops, vehicles, weapons, aircraft, ships, the aftermath of battles, and Cairo. Military life depicted are encampments in the desert, soldiers at dinner, at sport, and in hospital. Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'.
