Description: Reminiscences of early days in Marlborough written in 1857; copies of verse and satire by the family; copy of letter and verse by Henry Harper on Martha Adam's death, plan of family home, Redwood; biographical details from the Cyclopedia of New Zealand and newspaper clippings concerning her husband and eldest son; and sketches she made as a girl in England. Describes her English childhood, marriage to William Adams in 1840 and emigration to Nelson 1850. She describes the `mud hovel' in which the Adams family first lived when taking up a Marlborough run in 1852, and recalls the islolated life which at times found her coping alone with house and farm work, sick children, food shortages and vagrants. Her account ends with the family's move to a new property `Langley Dale', on the Wairau River. Description: Maps identifies mission stations, station outposts and religious frontier posts. These have been annotated in coloured pen to distinguish religious groups, for example Church Mission (Society Anglican), Wesleyan Missionary Society, Roman Catholic Mission, Prebyterian Mission and North German Missionary Society. The most prominent group is the Church Missionary Society and then the Catholic Society. The mission stations are most dense in the Auckland region and the upper North Island. In contrast, there are no inland stations in the entire South Island. The enlargement (29 x 72 cm) shows the most dense section of mission stations, between Bay of Islands and the Hokianga harbour and north up to Kaitaia and Whangaroa. Description: Marsden, his eyes closed, a Bible in his left hand, standing slightly left of centre in a makeshift pulpit draped with black cloth, preaching to a congregation of Maori and Pakeha men, women and children at Rangihoua, Bay of Islands. At least two of the congregation are also holding Bibles. Maori dwellings and canoes beyond on the beach, with European rowboats also pulled up on the beach. The original painting from which the reproductions were taken - a watercolour according to information supplied at the time of the donation, but the reproduction looks more like an oil, and oils were the artist's normal medium - was sent to America, presumably to the Bible Society in New York. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Leonard C. Mitchell Commissioned by the Bible Society to mark the 150th anniversary of the occasion depicted and said to be one of only two reproductions made from the original watercolour, the other held by the Bible Society in Wellington.
