Nine-part panorama forming a complete circle, of the view from the parsonage attached to St James Anglican Church Lower Hutt. Shows the parsonage with surrounding houses and farms, cleared land, roads, bush and hills in the background. There are men on horseback, a light horse-drawn trap, men ploughing with a horse-drawn plough, and a wagon drawn by two horses. Description: A tent and a group of four men, three Pakeha, one Maori, seated on the ground, having a picnic in a clearing in bush, hills beyond them and water below them. One of the men, seated with his back resting on a tree-trunk, is either drawing or making notes; one, possibly William Cotton, with spectacles, seated on the left is handing out food from a plate; one is reclining on the ground, the fourth, a Maori student, is seated and is being passed food The four men are likely to be students and /or teachers at St John's theological College, Purewa, Auckland. The man wearing glasses and facing the viewer may be William Charles Cotton, while the man showing sketching may be a self-portrait. The location of Potato Bay is not known, but is likely to be in Auckland, possibly near Meadowbank, where Hutton and Cotton were teaching. T. B. Hutton arrived in New Zealand in 1843 and taught at St John's College at Waimate in the Bay of Islands until 1844 when he moved to Auckland. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Section, elevation and ground plan of Heke's pa at Ohaeawai, Northland. The section shows a Maori man kneeling in a trench with a rifle aimed through gun-holes in the palisade and two Maori seated inside a shelter beyond the palisade area. The ground plan includes measurements and the disposal of buildings inside the palisades and trenches. Other Titles - Ohaeawai T. B. Description: A lawn in front, with croquet hoops, inset garden and winding paths on both sides, leading to the house, with an outbuilding on the right and trees on both sides. A woman is moving along the path on the right and another on the path on the left. Henry Williams moved into this house in 1830. There is a drawing of the house by him in Auckland Institute and Museum, location PD 52 (2). The Library has a photograph of the drawing under Williams, Henry. House at Paihia ... 1830. Possibly the work of T B Hutton, Williams' son-in-law. He visited Paihia about 1858-1860. The style appears similar to his work. Other Titles - Archdeacon Henry Williams' house. Description: Two students in academic gowns to the left, one carrying a spear; a woman and two Maori children to the right, in a courtyard outside the fenced area in front of some of the buidings of the Waimate North Mission Station, which is seen from the side as the right-hand building. On the far left is the Infant school, with the College Store immediately to its right and behind it, while the group of buildings in the centre comprise the kitchen, the hall and the English boys' schoolroom. On the right, the mission house itself has the function Breakfast and Mess rooms assigned to it. The copyist, if the last initial is W rather than M, could be a member of the Williams family. Description: Shows two houses (or a house and chapel?) with well-established fenced gardens on flat land close to the sea. There is promontory with a flagpole beyond the more distant house, and the masts of a ship are visible beyond the promontory. The view is from the land, looking towards the harbour. Horotutu, according to information from the donor, was the next bay to Paihia, on the Waitangi side. Henry and Marianne Williams arrived at the Bay of Islands as missionaries in 1823. Inscriptions: Verso - Title, date, in ink There is an almost identical view on page 1 of Hutton's sketchbook, 'Horotutu from back paddock' (E-137-q-001) The artist arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1842, taught at St John's College, Auckland from 1844 and later trained as an Anglican minister.
