Description: A defensive fort with a surrounding fence, a house to the left, looking south along the foreshore past a wharf at Akaroa. Located at the southern end of Akaroa township in 'English Town'. One of three blockhouses built by the French Navy after the Wairau Affray and hostilities between Maori and Pakeha in Northland and Wellington. The Akaroa blockhouses were never used. Description: Sketch on the right shows a view across a plain with small round ponds from a camp fire beneath overhanging rocks, 'Commissioner's Cave, Ototara. The sketch on the left shows a man with a broad-brimmed hat, and patched trousers, leaning against the walls of a small wooden shelter, with a table and cooking pots on the ground beside him. It appears to be a copy of F. E.
