Description: Page from the Illustrated London news with sketches of 10 weapons - 1. Small tomahawk (patiti), used for hand-to-hand fighting; 2. Cartouche-box (hamanu) to carry eighteen rounds; 3. Greenstone club or mere, otherwise called poenamu, which is the baton of a chief; 4. Whale bone mere, called papaoa, carried by a band round the neck; 5. Spear (tao) either of hard wood sharpened or with an iron point or a bayonet fixed at the end; 6. Long tomahawk (kakanroa) for thrusting or cutting in a hand-to-hand fight; also used to walk with; 7. Guns (Pu) which are mostly percussion muskets and many were also found which had been taken from our men; 8. A chief's spear (taiaha) ornamented with the breast feathers of the brown parrots; 9. Bayonet (peniti); 10. Club (wahaika) made of hard wood or whalebone and used either to thrust with the small point or to strike with the axelike head. Description: Digital laser copy of a privately owned watercolour. Shows a scene at Tauranga, looking towards the sea with several ships and waka in the roadstead, and tents along the water's edge. Shows Ngati Rangi seated around a large pile of rifles, taiaha and swords. A large group of Maori is seated, with their leader, Hori Ngatai standing in the centre and speaking. Compare to detail reproduced in "New Zealand's heritage", part 40, front cover; this is said to be reproduced from a picture in the National Museum. Robley with portraits of Maori, drawings of tiki, a portrait of Raniera te Hiahia, drawings of campaign scenes in India and Burma by Sheffield Hamilton Grace, young women of several nations and campaign scenes in India. Several portraits by other hands including three signed E M E Portraits of Maori including "Raniera Te Hiahia - Guide to the Tauranga field force. 1864." Description: Scene at Tauranga, with Ngāi Te Rangi bringing in their arms and the arms of British soldiers captured in battle, after the battle of Gate Pa. The White Ensign is flying on a flagpole. A large group of Maori is seated, with their leader, Hori Ngatai standing in the centre and speaking. The captured British swords are plunged into the ground close to the table where the peace agreement is being signed. A two-storied European house at upper left and another house in the background Compared to engraving in Illustrated London News, 1864, v.45, p.429. Description: A three-quarter length portrait of Taratoa seated on a hillside in front of a palisade fence on the skyline 60 paces away. A flag flies on the flagpole by the fence. The flag has a red background, with (top left to bottom right) a Christian cross, an inverted new moon, and a 5-pointed star. Taratoa wears a rural European grey smock and bark (grey?) neckerchief. Based on a photograph. Robley is not thought to have met Taratoa Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - H G Robley; Recto - bottom left - The flagstaff 60 paces in rear; Verso - Portrait of Taratoa lay preacher (Selwyn), a Ngaiterangi chief killed at Te Ranga 21 June 64 / whose name is on the RAWIRI monument at Te Papa cemetry / who was Maori commander [may refer to Rawiri]. A window at Lichfield Cathedral placed by Bishop Selwyn to this lay preacher who drew up the humane order for fighting; as to protecting wounded men and bodies of the dead from desecration (as had lately happened at Te Ahu Ahu fight). Description: View of the trenches at Gate Pa, Tauranga, looking east, the front of the pa to the left, the rear to the right, after its capture by British forces in April 1864. European soldiers standing guard, two carrying a stretcher in the background, a rifle and parts of the broken palisade lying in the foreground, and wounded and dead Maori men visible in the trenches, including Reweti, in a trench to the right, facing the viewer. A tunnel on the left is marked as a covered way, and a tall pole in the background, on a slant is the flagpole. A low land formation in the background to the left is noted as Maungatapu cliffs with cemetery. Tauranga Harbour can be seen in the background Very similar to A-033-009. Robley made many copies of this view Another such view in Cowan's New Zealand Wars has Robley's additional explanatory text around the outside (neg 10985 1/2). The section along the left, to the left of the trench and inside the palisade is a covered passage leading to rifle pits. The figure lying in the left trench is described as 'dead Maori on blanket'. The figure in the right-hand trench is described as 'bearded wounded Maori' and 'Sticks knocked from the palisade' and 'sticks of palisade scathed by shot', '68th sentry on the higher part of the Pa', as well as 'fallen flagstaff in rear' are noted.
