NZ Book month 2013: vouchers, events and reading superheroes

February 27th, 2013, By Jo Buchan

NZ Book Month celebrates the joy of reading and books. And, thanks to the support of Caltex Energy for Learning, Services to Schools will again distribute NZ Book Month $5 book vouchers to schools and students throughout New Zealand.

Research points to books in homes as a vital key to a child’s educational success. Mariah Evans and colleagues at Nevada, UCLA and Australian National University found that even 20 books in a home furthers the chance of a child entering higher levels of education. The more books in the house, the greater the benefit.

Reading role models are also crucial – reading to children, reading with children and talking about what they read for pleasure. In March students can enter the Reading Superheroes Competition. This is a great opportunity for your students to acknowledge a family member, school librarian, teacher, principal or other reading role model, who read to them and inspired them to become readers.
