Blackout Poetry

Texas poet Austin Kleon wrote ‘Newspaper Blackout’ back in 2010 launching Blackout Poetry as a new form of poetry writing. See Austin’s explanation of how he came to create this form.

There are a number of different approaches you can take to creating such a poem which are only limited by your ability to see patterns in the print. This would be a great creative activity to host in the library during a lunchtime, as part of a classroom literacy programme, or to celebrate National Poetry Day on the 22 August.

When selecting texts to use for Blackout Poetry remember it is important to establish what copyright restrictions may apply, particularly when reusing content in this way. Our Mix and Mash free to mix guide is a useful reference to inform your practice and you can always contact the copyright owner directly.
