Photographs, art and rare books
Trouble in Paradise presents the 60 winning photographs of a competition run by the UK Government to document the effects of the climate crisis in the Pacific.
The exhibition also features a newly commissioned artwork by artist Sheyne Tuffery, and a selection of historical rare books from the collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library.
Effects of climate change in the Pacific
Climate change has reached code red for humanity, and the Pacific islands are among the most vulnerable to its effects. Global temperatures are inexorably rising, and in the Pacific, the destruction is already happening.
Trouble in Paradise presents the 60 winning photographs of a competition run by the UK Government to document the effects of the climate crisis in the Pacific.
Resilience of Pacific peoples
Photographers from as young as eight paint a stark picture of the rising sea levels, tropical cyclones and frequent floods experienced by those living on the islands. But the images also offer hope, showing the resilience of Pacific peoples and their determination to leave the environment in a better state for the next generation.
Sheyne Tuffrey multi-media installation
An artwork by Wellington-based artist Sheyne Tuffery has been commissioned for this show. Sheyne works out from the ‘non-identity’ of his mixed Palagi and Samoan heritage, and is well known for his themed woodblock prints of South Pacific architecture and the birds of Aotearoa. For Trouble in Paradise, he has created a multi-media installation based on the politics of land-use in the Pacific.
Free exhibition
Trouble in Paradise opens at the National Library Gallery on 4 November 2021, timed to coincide with COP26, the major UN climate change conference held in Glasgow.
