Description: Ring binder storing photographs of Wellington people, businesses, buildings and streets taken by Les Cleveland between 2002 and 2005. Contains 35mm negative strips in sleeves and contact prints as well as interleaved handwritten notes on the content of the photographs, with information on subjects, locations, and people. Photographs include Buckle Street Barracks, buildings on Taranaki Street, musicians busking on Lambton Quay, Bank of New Zealand building (at the intersection of Willis Street and Lambton Quay), Nada Bakery Van [Tawa?] rear views of Cuba Street buildings, and the interior of a fabric store [Jesse Street?]. There are numerous photographs relating to Tonks Avenue and these include buildings and sheds, gardens, residents, and a cat on a TV set. Photographs also show the Hutt River Mouth and a window display in Petone showing a male mannequin in the window of an antique store which Cleveland has titled “Unknown Warrior”. Also the interior of a Pac N' Save supermarket at an unknown location. Cleveland family scenes include Peter, Mary, and Les Cleveland. Description: Ring binder storing photographs, mainly of the Wellington Region taken by Les Cleveland between 1996 and 2002. Contains 35 mm negative strips in sleeves and the corresponding contact sheets as well as interleaved handwritten notes on the content of the photographs, such as information on subject, locations, and people. Photographs of Les Cleveland likely taken by Mary Cleveland. Wellington City locations feature Newtown shops, Cuba Street, Tonks Avenue, and Taranaki Street. Photographs also show the original Staples Brewery building on Murphy Street, Chinese Mission on Frederick Street, alterations being made to the Bank of New Zealand building, Thistle Inn, Wellington Fish Supplies interior, signage for a Les Cleveland exhibition at City Gallery, and hoardings from the 1996 election as well as a Christian Heritage Party youth rally at parliament that same year (with a band playing on a stage erected in front of the beehive). Other buildings, including residential house and businesses, are also photographed. Photographs from the wider Wellington Region include images from Porirua and Petone. Wairarapa scenes include Murphy’s Orchard and possibly Greytown businesses. Also contains photographs of the post office and railway station in Shannon. Railway station scenes feature the locomotive of a steam train and unidentified children on the platform. Christchurch photographs include buildings on Hereford Street and a couple in a window at Java Coffee House. A photograph taken on Burke’s Pass shows a variety of footwear piled on a fence and seascapes, landscapes and buildings at Haast are also included. Les and Mary Cleveland are photographed on a bridge over the Arawhata River. Identified people include Lisa at Just Teasing, Dave Smith [Tonks Avenue resident?], Mary and Les Cleveland and their sons Peter and Edward; Sarah Thompson and her parents; and the Porter family including Annabelle Porter and two children. Numerous unidentified people are photographed in a variety of locations. Subjects of notable interest to Cleveland in this album are the development of the Wellington Bypass and protest around this, graffiti, buildings, and businesses, often including their window display. 35mm South ISLAND

Description: Ring binder storing photographs taken by Les Cleveland in the South Island, in particular on the West Coast, in circa 1985 and between 1995 to 2002. Contains 35mm negative strips in sleeves and the corresponding contact prints as well as interleaved handwritten notes on the content of the photographs, including information on locations and people. Contains images of a number of unidentified people, including a family and other locals from Neil’s Beach, a Jackson Bay Christmas party, and unidentified women at a street stall outside O’Connors Bar (location unknown). Identified people include Bernie Preston (owner of Preston’s Bakery, Hokitika), artist William Stegn, and multiple photographs of Cleveland family members. The Cleveland family are seen on a number of holidays, with Peter, Edward, Mary and Les Cleveland all appearing in the photographs. Holiday destinations include to the Queenstown-Lakes District in 2000 and a Christmas vacation at Neil’s Beach in 1997. Neil’s Beach photographs also include two young women, one of whom is likely Donna (who later married Peter Cleveland). Donna Cleveland also appears in Queenstown images. A photograph from circa 1985 shows Mary, Edward, and Peter outside the Lake Chalice Hutt in their tramping gear. Hokitika photographs feature buildings and businesses including exterior photographs of the sheep-shaped entrance to a store called Sheep Station, Carnegie Library on Hamilton Street, Westland District War Memorial, an art gallery located in the old Custom House, and various hotels and bars. Also includes photographs of the Hokitika canon, South African War memorial, and the interior of Preston’s Bakery. Neil’s Beach photographs feature the wharf and beach scenes including Les Cleveland standing on the wharf, various buildings, cabbage trees, a dead tree, and driftwood. Some images may have been taken on Haast Beach. Also contains photographs of the graveyard at Lyell and some rural scenes. Christchurch photographs include a set of images relating to the Warner Hotel. These images show the hotel building itself as well as Paul Thompson being interviewed about it in Cathedral Square by an unidentified radio reporter. Other Christchurch images include a Bofors anti-aircraft gun installed outside the Christchurch Museum with some images showing a protestor playing a guitar by the gun and anti war placards. Otago Region photographs feature Queenstown, Cromwell, and Arrowtown as well as rural areas. Photographs show dwellings, businesses, a church, river scenes, an Arrow International building site, the Cardrona Hotel, and scenes from the shooting of the film Vertical Limit including a large climbing wall. Also contains photographs of unidentified people. There are also a few images of Wellington, with a photograph showing the Hong Kong Café on Taranaki street. Description: Ring binder storing photographs taken by Les Cleveland largely during his travel in the South West of the United States with Mary Cleveland, circa 1994 to 1996. Contains 35mm negative strips in sleeves and the corresponding contact sheets. Some notes regarding dates and locations are also included in the folder. In addition to the 1990s trip, a smaller portion of photographs relate to an earlier family holiday to the United States in 1987. Some photographs show hoardings from the1996 New Zealand general election. Photographs taken circa 1994-1996 feature the states of Arizona, Nevada, and California. Photographs show buildings, businesses, street scenes, vehicles, unidentified people, cemeteries, cacti, roads, art galleries, parades, bars, sculptures, RV parks, and geographical features such as deserts, canyons, and beaches. The specifics of some of these photographs are listed below: Arizona photographs are taken at locations including Quartzite, Yuma, Wickenburg, Benson, Tombstone, Bisbee, Tonopah, Marana, and Scottsdale. Notable series include a parade in Wickenburg (vehicles, beauty queens, and Sherriff Joe Arpio), the bull sale at the Marana Stockyards, the Arab horse show at Scottsdale, and a visit to the Titan II Missile Museum, California photographs include images taken in Needles, Palm Springs, Big Sur, San Juan Bautista, Merced, Yosemite National Park, Chinese Camp, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara. Washington D.C. photographs feature Arlington Cemetery. Cleveland took numerous photographs on board the USS North Carolina, docked in Wilmington. Album also contains photographs of the family on a trip to Mesa Verde National Park, with images showing the cliff dwellings and a tour group including Peter, Edward, Les, and Mary Cleveland. Description: Ring binder storing photographs taken by Les Cleveland during his travel in the South West of the United States with Mary Cleveland, circa 1994 to 1996. Contains 35mm negative strips in sleeves and the corresponding contact prints. There are some interleaved notes regarding dates and locations. Photographs are taken in Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. They feature street scenes, buildings, and tourist sites. Mary Cleveland appears in many of the photographs. The specifics of some of these are listed below. Nevada photographs show Las Vegas, including casino scenes (Lady Luck, Glitter Gulch, The Caribbean, Treasure Island, The Linq) and a performance by the Rockettes. New Mexico photographs show buildings and street scenes in Albuquerque. Photographs taken in Colorado feature Mesa Verde National Park, with Cleveland photographing the site as well as ranger Don Ross (tour guide). There are also photographs taken in Cortez showing the Beanery and an old saddle on the ground. The majority of photographs were taken in Arizona. Locations visited and photographed by Cleveland include Santa Fe, Taos Pueblo, Waptaki National Monument, Jerome, Montezuma Castle National Monument, Quartzsite, Casa Grande, Tombstone, Oatman, Wickenburg, Wenden, Yuma, Painted Rock, Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Benson. Buildings and street scenes feature and there are also scenes of deserts and ruins and tourist sites. Numerous unidentified people appear in the photographs. Museums and art galleries include the Jerome Historical Society Mine Museum, Chaplin Fighter Musuem (with Les Cleveland appearing in a number of photographs), Arizona Museum of Natural History, and Heard Museum in Phoenix. There are also photographs of a number of public sculptures. Two parades are covered: a Superbowl Parade in Phoenix and the Parada del Sol in Scottsdale. Interior and exterior photographs of the Mission San Xavier del Bac are included and Cleveland photographs tours taken in Casa Grande and at Taos. There are a number of market scenes (including photographs of items for sale such as Day of the Dead puppets, gourds, and sculptures).
