Landscapes, scenes of military life during the Taranaki campaigns, 1864, 1866; views of Auckland and Wanganui.

Contains diary notes for the period 12 January 1865 (when he left Auckland), to 18 May 1865 when he was in the South Taranaki area.

Williams was in New Zealand during the wars of 1864-1866.

Description: Shows men on horseback ranging of hillside at left foreground, a stand of bush in right foreground, overlooking a plain, with Mount Taranaki in centre distance. Title found on page [55] of diary. Previously given the title ["Military on horses. Taranaki. Mt Egmont in background. 1864-1866]. See similar view, painted 15 March 1865, at E-510-052/053. Other Titles - Military on horses. Taranaki. Mount Egmont. Inscriptions: Verso - bottom right - [Title]; Verso - bottom right - Major Brooke R.E.; Capt Betty R.A., Lt Campbell R.A.; Sergt Phillips, R.A. and self According to Williams' diary notes for 14 March (page 45), the army moved to Pa Manutahi on that day, and on 17 March on page [50], "in the afternoon rode out with Betty, Brooke, Campbell and Sergt Phillips to a point a mile in advance of the outposts and got a sketch looking towards Mt Egmont". Description: Shows riverbed boulders in foreground, cliffs and waterfall in background. Verso describes in diary form the events of 11-13 April: the finding of a damaged surfboat taken against express orders; a retreat commenced leaving 300 men in Redoubt - reached Tongahoe and camped. Next day marched to Patea - cold rainy weather - comment on ineffectiveness of steamer communication along coast. Dated by reference to B-045-055. Other Titles - Waingongoro Left recto has manuscript diary notes for 1-10 April 1865. Verso has diary notes for 11 to 13 April 1865. Description: Shows group of Maori at left, preparing for a skirmish. Some sit on horseback, some stand with spears, one aims a rifle, and some sit in cloaks on the ground. Cabbage trees stand about. At right is the wooden framework (remains?) of a shelter?, and in the distance is a hill with conical top, although possibly not high or smooth-topped enough to be Mt Taranaki. Assigned heading only. May not be Mt Egmont. May be somewhere closer to Wanganui; see diary notes on page 32 (E-510-032), which describe skirmishes near Wanganui in late January, early February 1865. Diary notes on page 32: 24 January: Skirmishing began immediately and the natives returned from whares to bush which they held and inflicted on us a loss of [Poor?] Johnson, D.A.A.G. and 6 men killed and wounded. 25 Jany - working parties and ....driven in along whole point,and general skirmishing at 2 - natives attacked with... - several killed closer up to camp - 22 buried. Ordered guns out and joined them soon after - fired some 20 rounds - Rebels beaten back with 22 left dead - we had 13 killed and as many wounded - Wilson and grant 50 Regt badly wounded - firing over by 5 - nothing more occurred. -26th - Reconnoitred all morning - 1 gun ordered up the heights in rear. General gone in to wanganui - [Monty?] and Donnithorne arrive on visit - signs of establishing a post. 27 - nothing doing - 28 - another dead native - 2 redoubts for pickets completed. - 29 and 30 - nothing doing. 31. Out reconnoitring the Waitotara - 4 f... 1 [Feb] Finding some bodies and believe they have lost 70 killed and a few wounded - potato parties get good stock nearby - a false alarm at 11pm and again in the early morning. 3 Feb. Description: Shows close view of troops on the bank of the river preparing to cross: some loading dinghy at left, a group sitting smoking pipes centre left, a cannon and packhorses waiting to go. Further off are wagons, more soldiers, two sailing ships and several dinghies crossing the river towards the left bank in left distance. At right background rises the high ground of the right bank, and in central distance the camp on the cliff top. Verso contains pencilled diary notes for 14, 15, 16 March 1865: packed up tents and marched to Manutahi Pa but no sign of life there and they took peaceful possession, looting wharies and getting a few pigeon spears, mats and plenty of potatoes - went out and shot a pig and stabbed another - next day shot another pig with revolver. On 16 March, got up early and went to stock yards where a "most troublesome little black cow" was chosen - she ran and "butted everything including a poor gun horse who got in the way - however she was soon lashed up to a gun, and yielded good milk for breakfast". Description: Shows verandahed villa located in Karangahape Road, Auckland. The house tenanted by General Duncan Cameron at the time. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [Title] This house was the second house built to identical plans on this site. The first version built in about 1846-47 and known as Scoria House, was lived in by Governor Grey, but was bought after his 1853 departure by Mr Thomas Keven, a boot manufacturer. John Kinder painted "Auckland from the verandah of Mr Keven's house 1855", from the first version. In September 1857, the house burnt down, but Keven rebuilt it again to its original plan. It was tenanted by General D.A. Cameron. It was bought in about December 1865 by Charles Davis. Quantity: 1 drawing(s) in sketchbook.. Physical Description: Pencil, 138 x 464 mm.
