- Description
Collection of papers, photographs and drawings, relating to Māori waiata, culture, and poetry, and Polynesian culture in general. A large amount of material relates to Orbell's later (1990s-2000s) research and writing projects, including the books 'Songs of a Kaumatua', 'Letters to the Mountain', 'Birds of Aotearoa', and various articles. There are also research and draft papers relating to at least three unpublished or uncompleted projects: 'Islands of song' (translations of poetry from different Polynesian cultures, prepared in the early 1980s and still being negotiated for publication in the late 1990s); 'Crossing Raukawa' (waiata relating to Cook Strait); and a monograph about metaphors of the body being the basis for human culture.
Also papers going back to the 1970s relating to the book 'Traditional songs of the Maori', Orbell's MA thesis on waiata aroha, the book 'Nga korero a Pita Kapiti' (which Orbell appears to have helped edit), and lectures and teaching activities. Includes research notes; clippings; book and article drafts; correspondence with colleagues, informants and institutions; and photocopied material (mostly with extensive annotations) and printouts. Notable correspondents include: Mervyn McLean, Tai Black, Rowley Habib, Allan Thomas, John Charlot, Ron Brownson, Colin McCahon, Wiremu Parker, Anaru Reedy, Richard Nunns, Witi Ihimaera, and John Mansfield Thomson.
The collection also includes an extensive array of photographic images as negatives, slides, and prints. Much of the material comprises original images taken by Orbell and her husband Gordon Walters in the 1950s and 1960s, mainly of meeting houses around New Zealand, and Māori artifacts in museums. Some of the negatives were housed in 'Te Ao Hou' envelopes, suggesting they may have been used for this magazine during Orbell's editorship (1961-1965).
Orbell's two-volume 1997 Doctoral thesis, and six published books which feature varying degrees of annotation are also included in this collection.
Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music.
