Description

Most of the transparencies and negatives in this collection are of New Zealand private and public gardens taken between ca 1992 and 1997. Another group are of historic houses and a few commercial buildings and businesses. These include interior and exterior views of buildings, as well as views of the associated gardens (or, in the case of businesses, stock). There are also photographs of interior and exterior views of up-market private hotels. Examples of other groups of photographs include The Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest, the restoration of Ohakune Railway Station, the commercial production of carrots, and the Cameron House Restaurant in Wanganui in the late 1980s/early 1990s. In most cases all groups of photographs have a folder of documents relating to them.

Denis Friar was a painter, photographer and teacher, who with his wife, Jillian, a journalist, worked together on magazine articles, guides to New Zealand gardens open to visit, and a guide to up-market accomodation in New Zealand. They also published two books on gardens: Private Gardens of New Zealand, Wellington, Wairarapa, Kapiti Coast, and Private Gardens of New Zealand, South Island, both published by Moa Becket, Auckland in 1994 and 1995. They supplied articles to magazines such as New Zealand House and Garden, New Zealand Gardener, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, Your Home and Garden, Next, and Country Style (among others). The garden guides and two garden books are part of this collection.

It is also worth noting that many of the gardens recorded in this collection resulted from a revival of interest in ornamental gardens, particularly the styles associated with the \"English garden\" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This revival was a notable feature of the 1980s and 1990s, in New Zealand. At the same time there was a move on the part of owners to open their gardens to visitors. This collection is a rich record of both of these cultural developments.
