Description

Photographic archive of Les Cleveland comprising photographic prints, negatives, albums, transparency slides, index cards, photographic ephemera, and digital photographs, circa 1860s to 2014. Most photographs in the collection are taken by Cleveland with a few exceptions including photographs taken by other Cleveland family members or where images were collected, but not taken, by Cleveland.

Photographs are taken predominantly in New Zealand, but also in the United States of America, Australia, Portugal, Spain, and Gibraltar. They include photographs relating to Cleveland’s family life and personal interests as well as his work as a professional photographer. Key locations and topics covered are the West Coast Region, Wellington Region, mountaineering and skiing, industry, and buildings. Includes a card index created by Cleveland for his own negatives.

The majority of the collection was deposited at the Library in 2016. Earlier materials donated by Les Cleveland include:

-Photographic prints taken in New Zealand between 1954 and 2007 by Cleveland. The majority of images are from the South Island, with a focus on social customs, working men, buildings, and scenery in the West Coast Region. Also contains 56 images taken in the lower North Island and photographs of Canterbury, Otago, and Nelson regions featuring similar subject matter. North Island prints also include photographs of Māori art as well as of the protest movement against the Wellington inner city bypass. Cleveland has identified and dated most prints.

Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1957 to 2006. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Includes photographs of buildings, mainly commercial premises, in Wellington and Wanganui, 1957-1959. Also contains images of two old farm cottages in the Wairarapa, a tree house in Paihiatua, a car yard in Petone, and a shop reusing ammunition boxes from World War II as a flowerbed in Palmerston North. A number of photographs from 2002 document the protest around the building of the inner city bypass in Wellington. These images feature Tonks Avenue, protestors, affected buildings, an individual who was to be being evicted, and protest art. Two 2006 mages show demolition on Kensington Lane. Images of people include two women drinking beer in Ohingaiti, a motorcycle family in Turangi, and young children climing on a wooden sculpture in Porirua. A series of Maori carvings in public spaces includes sculptures on the Petone Foreshore, in Te Rauparaha Park, Porirua, and Tokaanu. Description: Photographs of the South Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1956 to 1958. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Most prints relate to the West Coast Region, but also some images of Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago regions. Identified people are: Kopara Sawmill workers Bill Brown, Owen Jacobs, Morry Pullman, Hans Van Ruyven, Jimmy Birchfield, Doug Macalister, Joe Kavanagh, Neil McLean, Archy Fluerty, saw doctor John Henry Ord, Ted McGhie; licensee of Nelson Creek Hotel D Graham; Dorothy Debenham; Mick Bowie, and chief guide at Mt Cook Hermitage. Unidentified people include a female French tourist and some children. Featured natural environments include Karamea beach scenes, mining and sawmilling sites, and Buller Gorge. Featured town sequences include Reefton and Nelson's Creek houses and businesses, many of which are derelict. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Identified people are: Senior Sergeant George Christopher Donnelly of Hokitika police; Ivy Harper and Bert Birchfield; Mike Armstrong and Jim Daken; Mary and Heather Cornwell; Charleston coal mine operator Neil Mouat; Mack Heinz; Tex Smith; Mike Armstrong; Henry Heveldt and M Bennett of Nolan's Mill; Garth Graham; meat shooters Mike Bennett and Kevin Blythell; John 'Opo' Angus, the Eggling brothers; helicopter pilot Ben Morris and Les's wife Mary Cleveland; and Johnny Hewer, Claire Easterbrook and Liam Easterbrook in front of the Neils Beach school house. Featured natural environments include the hot springs at Welcome Flat and the Karangarua Valley, River, Ranges, and the view from the Sefton bivouac, Ocean Beach, and Neils Beach, including car wrecks at the rubbish dump.
