Description

Contains material collected by Ken English during his time as a New Zealand Rugby League representative player and official, and manager of the Wellington Show Association.

Material includes event programmes, photographs, and administrative records: inward correspondence, internal memoranda, scrapbooks, financial statements, and original and photocopied newspaper clippings relating to his career.

Ken English was a police officer in Wellington. He played rugby league for St. George in Wellington, and in 1947 was selected for the Wellington representative side touring the South Island. He played one international test match (against France) in 1951. He was then a member of the 1951/52 "Kiwi" tour of England and France. Ken English was the Manager of the Wellington Show Association 1967-1980.

Description: Material relating to English's Rugby League career. Contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, and business documents. Correspondence includes a photocopy of a personal letter from English to a police colleage ("Ferg") while on tour in England and France in 1951. It includes a personal report on the matches, followed by a lengthy discussion of the Battley fingerprinting filing system as used at Scotland yard, and a newer system used at Glasgow Police Department. Other correspondence includes congratulatory letters from the New Zealand Rugby League regarding his life membership, and an invitation to the Wellington Rugby League' centennial celebrations in 2012. Other documents include Minutes of the 71st (1980) Annual General Meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Football League, terms of reference for a new executive position within the League, a working sheet for trophy engravings, and a copy of the book "An illustrated history of Wellington Rugby League 1919-2012" autographed by some past players. Description: A scrapbook covering English's first season (1947) as a club player and Wellington representative, to 1950. Contains game programmes for the Canterbury v Wellington match 13 September 1947 and Maori v Pakeha match 05 June 1950, newspaper clippings, and black and white photographs relating to his career during that period. There are two formal team photographs, one of the Wellington team at Canterbury, the other a pre-match photograph of two unidetified teams. Included are 21 black and white photographs taken during English's rugby league playing career, in particular of the 1951 playing tour of England and France, These photos show games in progress and the team visiting various places in France and the North of England. Also included are formal team photographs, including the 1951 touring team, The Wellington Police Team, Wellington representative team, Test selection teams (Probables and Possibles), some unidentified teams, and Rugby League officials. Also included are two photographs relating to the tour of the New South Wales Police cricket team: one formal, showing the New South Wales Police and Wellington Police teams, the other showing players walking on to the field. There is a team photo of Philips Electrical Cricket Club, 1966/67 season, Also 12 black and white and three colour photographs, captioned on the reverse, relating to Trade Shows between 1971 and 1978. Events include 1971 International Trade Fair, 1973 New Zealand Trade fair, 1975 World Trade Fair, and the 1978 New Zealand Trade Fair.
