Comprises correspondence with other writers, academics, publishers and PEN; correspondence and research notes, recordings and transcripts of interviews, for biographies and historical works, drafts, correspondence and notes for other published writings, such as reviews and articles; papers associated with television documentaries, mainly on Maori subjects; other enterprises, such as acting as a tour guide for historical sites in Northland and on the Chatham Islands; reviews of his books; literary and legal controversies; notes and other papers on unrealised biographies and histories. There is a separate collection of correspondence and other papers, held under the title of `personal papers' which King may have been collecting for his own autobiography.

Processing information: Collection reference number changed from MS-Group-0667 to ATL -Group-00620 in December 2021 when oral history recordings were re-integrated with main collection record.

- Partly restricted material - Access to personal correspondence (in all series) and journal entries (the material held in Series 1 and 27) requires written permission of the literary executors of Dr King. Access to letters within the collection that are from living people and that contain personal information shall require the written permission of those living people. PEN papers less than 20 years old require the permission of the New Zealand Society of Authors. Some files in Series 12 require the permission of the Janet Frame Literary Trust or the Hocken Library. Access to other items within the collection is unrestricted.
